Viltrox 56mm f1.7 vs Fujifilm 56mm f1.2 WR
In this blog I will compare two 56mm options for Fujifilm, the Viltrox 56mm f1.7 and Fuji 56mm f1.2. As you read this comparison, please keep the following in mind… the Viltrox is $140 while the Fuji is around $1000 retail. This comparison will be from a more holistic perspective and we will not be getting into technical specifics. For a more detailed review on each lens please see their respective blogs below:
Similarities
There are only three similarities. First up is the obvious one, the focal length. The second one is more surprising because both lenses produce a great image. Of course there is a noticeable difference, but fundamentally both will give you an objectively good image. Finally both lenses suffer from slower autofocus systems making them more suitable for slower paced photography.
Differences
Let’s start with the most obvious one and it’s the price. The price difference is so vast that it’s almost pointless making this comparison. The $860 difference is big enough to get a whole camera along with the Viltrox lens and for 95% of people this alone will be the only deciding factor. The Viltrox is an all plastic build however the lens mount is metal. The Viltrox is not weather sealed nor does it have an aperture ring. This means that it’s vastly smaller and lighter than the Fuji alternative which for many people will also be a deciding factor. Of course there is a difference in aperture value however between 1.2 and 1.7 it’s not make or break for most scenarios. Moving to the image and if you shoot both at f8 in good light, you will get a pretty similar image as long as you don’t start studying the differences. With that said the Fuji lens has better colour & contrast rendering throughout the aperture values. Also the Fuji is noticeably sharper throughout and has a more pleasing look to out of focus elements. Of course none of this should be a surprise.
Why pick the Viltrox
The number one reason you would choose the Viltrox is price and to be honest this is incredible value for money. The Viltrox is also a better choice if you want a compact 56mm fast prime and you’re not fussed about a plastic build or lack of weather sealing.
Why pick the Fuji
Any photographer who genuinely needs the Fuji option will not even read this blog and if they do, they will find it amusing it even exists. However to remain objective you will pick the Fujifilm option if you need the best optical performance and the widest aperture at this focal length. Also you will most likely be a pro or an advanced enthusiast to justify this kind of money. Of course the other benefits still apply such as an aperture ring, metal build, weather sealing, superior image, better low light and the best integration with a Fuji camera.
Summary
The summary for this is simple. For 99% of people the Viltrox option is superior. For the 1% who need the Fuji, they will already know they need it and will not entertain this comparison. If you are genuinely comparing the two, get the Viltrox.
