Fujifilm XC 35mm f2 vs XF 35mm f2
If you’re in the market for a small 50mm equivalent prime for your Fuji then you’re spoilt for choice. However despite a ton of options from various brands, this blog will focus on the two Fujifilm branded lenses, the XC and XF 35mm f2.
I’ve written dedicated blogs for each lens that you can find below:
Common Strengths
Both lenses are light, compact and in the grand scheme of things affordable. Both have great image quality with a good AF system. Both produce nice colours, great contrast and plenty of sharpness. In terms of image quality, AF performance and portability these two lenses are the same.
Common Weaknesses
Nothing.
35mm XC > 35mm XF
There are only two reasons you would pick the XC over the XF. The first is price because the XC is over half the price of the XF lens so the cost saving is substantial. The second reason is if you don’t need any of the extra features that the XF comes with. I will cover this in next section. Finally the XC is a tiny bit lighter due to an all plastic build however given both are so light, the difference is minimal.
35mm XF > 35mm XC
Given the image quality and focus performance is the same, the only reason to go for the more expensive XF lens is for the extra features it offers. From a personal perspective, these features are worth the money. However for many people, they won’t matter and they’d rather save money. The main features in question are a full metal build, aperture ring and weather sealing. If you don’t care for these, then go ahead and save the money. On the other hand, if you want the tactile feel of an aperture ring and weather sealing, then the extra investment is worth it.
Summary
Both of these lenses will give you a great image and good AF performance. All you need to do is choose whether you want the extra features of the XF or the cost saving of the XC. That is a very personal decision however if you’re planning on making a long term investment, may I suggest spending more on the XF version because it will be a better overall user experience.
