Fujifilm 35mm f2 vs 35mm f1.4
When searching for a compact Fujifilm 35mm prime, there are two main options to consider. The Fuji 35mm f2 and the Fuji 35mm f1.4. There are plenty of other third party alternatives however for this blog we will just stick with Fuji branded glass. Also the 35mm f2 comes in two flavours. A budget XC lens and a premium XF option. This blog will compare the XF lens, however if you want more info on the XC, click here.
Similarities
Both lenses are incredibly small and light. They can easily fit in your pocket and wouldn’t feel out of place on even the smallest Fuji body. Both are metal and have a great build quality including a smooth focus ring and a solid aperture dial. Finally both of these produce great images that are sharp, well rendered and with pleasing contrast / colours.
Differences
The biggest initial difference is the aperture with one being f1.4 and the other f2. Although the difference might seem small, there is a noticeable improvement in low light performance. The second biggest difference is the size. Although both are small and light, the f2 is still a bit smaller. The f2 lens is fully weather sealed while the f1.4 isn’t. The f2 autofocus system is 100% internal while the f1.4 has external moving elements. On the subject of autofocus, the system in the f2 is more modern, quiet, accurate and fast compared to the f1.4 with the former feeling somewhat outdated. As for image quality even though both produce great results, the f1.4 is a little softer and characterful while the f2 is a little sharper and cleaner. With that said one has to shoot wide open and then study the images to see any difference.
Why pick the f1.4
If you frequently shoot in low light or want the most background blur, then the f1.4 is the clear option as it will physically give you better low light performance and a more blurry background. If you don’t shoot in the rain or dusty environments, then you will have no need for the weather sealing either. If you shoot mainly still life or slow moving subjects and don’t need the better AF performance, the f1.4 will be great. Finally if you can find the f1.4 for a good deal, then it’s worth it. Otherwise the full retail price is a little too steep in my opinion.
Why pick the f2
If you want the smallest possible package that’s weather sealed and has the better AF performance, then the f2 is the only option. The f2 is also cheaper. If you don’t shoot at night very often, then an f2 aperture is plenty for most scenarios. Finally if you shoot video, then the AF system in the f2 will perform better compared to the f1.4
