Fujifilm 35mm f1.4 vs 33mm f1.4

In this blog I will compare the Fujifilm 35mm f1.4 vs the newer 33mm f1.4 primes. I’ve owned the 33mm f1.4 since its release back in 2021 and it has been my most used lens to date. Although I never owned the 35mm f1.4, I had a lot of time with it in Japan therefore I feel versed enough to share this comparison. If you want a detailed review of each lens, please see links below.

Similarities

Let’s start with the key similarities with the two main ones being the focal length and the aperture. Although there is a 2mm difference in focal length, it’s not something you will notice. Other similarities include a solid metal build and fantastic image quality. Both of these lenses produce a great image that almost everyone will be pleased with. This is where the similarities end.

Differences

The biggest initial difference is the size and weight with the 35mm being noticeably smaller and lighter. It’s a substantial difference and becomes more apparent after a full day of shooting. Moving on the second biggest difference will be the autofocus. While the 35mm has an old and clunky system, the 33mm uses the latest linear motor autofocus which is in a different league. It’s silent, instant, reliable and dependable. The 35mm on the other hand is fine for still life and slow shooting but falls apart anytime you want to capture action or in a hurry. The third biggest difference is weather sealing. The 33mm is weather sealed and the 35mm isn’t. This isn’t a big deal if you don’t shoot in wet or dusty environments, however if you do, then this can be a dealbreaker. Finally although both of these lenses produce a great image, there are some subtle differences. The 33mm is sharp and clean while the 35mm is softer especially if shooting at f1.4 giving it a pleasing character. With that said the 33mm has a great look and 99% of people will never tell the difference. Personally I prefer the look of the 33mm.

Why pick the 35mm

The main reason I would pick the 35mm if I want the smallest and lightest f1.4 setup. I would also pick this lens if my photography doesn’t involve action nor takes me to wet or dusty places. Finally I would only pick the 35 if I can find it for a great price either new or used. In my opinion it’s not worth the asking price in 2024.

Why pick the 33mm

I would pick the 33mm if I want the best. The 33 is an objectively better lens in every way however it comes at the cost of size, weight and price. That being said if using on a bigger body like an XH, the lens feels small. If I need the best AF for action or video, a weather sealed body and the sharpest image, the 33mm is the clear winner. Finally if I plan on using the lens on a 40 megapixel sensor with the goal of cropping, the sharpness of the 33 will give you better results.
