Here you will find a list of the main gear I use. I don’t travel with all this stuff, and select what to bring based on the purpose. What I take with me on a family holiday is different from a two-month photo trip around Asia.
It has taken me many years to build this business to a point where it can afford to acquire such camera gear. This isn’t a hobby, and all the equipment you see below has made me more money than what I’ve spent on it. The point is that if for you this is a hobby, don’t think you need to get the same gear. Most of my favourite shots were taken on Fujifilm XT3, XT4, and XT5. All very affordable cameras.
For many items, if you click on the image, it will take you to that product (or similar if no longer available) on Amazon or B&H. These are affiliate links and I get a tiny percentage of any purchase you make. This doesn’t make much, but enough to cover some bills and carry on making videos and writing blogs.
The main body is the Sony A7RV. This is my workhorse and the camera I use for 95% of all photos and videos. The Sony A7CII is a video and backup camera. While it comes with me everywhere just in case, I seldom use it (unless I need a second body for video). If something were to happen to the A7R, the A7CII will do everything I need. In total, I will bring between two and five lenses depending on where I am going and what I’m doing.
The main lens is the Sony 24-70mm f2.8 II. This is the only lens I’d ever need, and I use it for a lot of my work. The second zoom is the Sony 70-200mm f4 II. This is my telephoto lens that also doubles up as a macro. I don’t shoot telephoto in low light, and I seldom go lower than f4. While this lens is fairly compact for what it is, I only bring it on specific trips where I am certain I will need all that reach.
The Sony 16mm f1.8 is my dedicated video / POV lens. It always comes with me if I know I will be doing a bunch of video. While I don’t shoot many ultra-wide scenes, if I had to, this lens would be perfect.
The 40mm f2.5 is my lightweight, minimal lens that I can throw on the camera if I want something small and light for a casual walk. Perfect for occasions where I want to have my camera just in case, but it’s not a dedicated photo day. It’s also an amazing everyday walkabout focal length. When fitted to the A7CII in particular, it makes for an incredibly compact package.
The 35mm and 85mm f1.4 GM lenses are my primes of choice. While I love my zoom, sometimes I want a nice prime to shoot with. The 35mm is a perfect everyday focal length and great for setting the scene. The 85mm is ideal for focusing on smaller details or on subjects far away. I went for f1.4 in order to have the best low-light performance. I don’t often travel with these lenses unless I specifically know I will need them. While they are not the most compact, I love the images they produce, and I’m willing to make that trade-off.
The Minolta 40mm is my fun lens for when I want a more hands-on shooting experience and a unique look.
