The Best Tokyo Rooftop Viewpoints

Tokyo is vast and that scale is best appreciated from above. Flying drones in the city is a sure way to of getting in trouble with the law while hoping for a favourable flight path and clear skies isn’t an option either. The best way to get a sense of Tokyo’s immense size is to get up high and in this blog I will share with you a few viewpoints that I have personally visited and enjoyed. Please keep in mind that these are not the only ones and there are many more out there. This blog simply covers the key locations that are not only easy to get to but are also open to the public.

Shibuya Sky

I will start with my favourite of them all which is Shibuya Sky located next to Shibuya station. As well as having a great indoor area, there’s also an impressive outdoor rooftop with 360 views of the city. Keep in mind that on windy days they can shut the outdoor area. Also it’s worth noting that cameras are required to be on neck straps and they will not accept anything else outside, even a wrist strap. There are neck straps available to rent if you need one. I suggest coming here twice, once during the day and also at night. During the day you will get a real sense of scale as you can see far and wide. At night you will have an amazing view of Shibuya crossing and even use the reflections of the indoor area to get some cool shots. If you only have time for one rooftop, it must be this one. Please note that you need to book ahead and tickets can be sold out weeks in advance especially during peak season and peak hours (sunset). Although this seems frustrating, it means that Shibuya Sky doesn’t get excessively busy… unlike the next location.

Tokyo Sky Tree

Tokyo Sky Tree was a bit of a mixed bag for me. The views were amazing and given it’s the highest point in Tokyo, you could see even further into the distance. I personally didn’t see it but I have been told that on a good day you could even see Fuji. The downside was the sheer number of people there. It felt like they tried to cram as many visitors as possible and make the most money. This resulted in a rather chaotic visiting experience with over an hour spent getting inside and nearly another hour leaving the place. While inside you had to deal with hundreds of people all fighting for the same viewpoint. With that said the view was great especially at sunset and despite the chaos, I would recommend a visit.

Tokyo Tower

Most Tokyo city scapes include Tokyo Tower in them however visiting the tower itself is also pretty cool. I would say that the view is not the best one and it will not leave you speechless. However you will see a different side of Tokyo and it’s still worth visiting if you have time. Personally I love the area around the tower with a nice park and temple to explore afterwards.

Aman Hotel (Ginza)

If you’re feeling fancy and want a slap up lunch or even a cigar with your viewpoint, then head straight to The Aman Hotel in Ginza. Take the elevator to the top floor and you will be greeted with one seriously impressive space and a stunning view of the city. The food is good but not amazing however the drinks are top notch. You will have to book ahead but if you manage to get there on a sunny day, you will have amazing scenery both inside and outside the building.

Tokyu Plaza (Ginza)

Staying in Ginza and the next location is a little less exclusive but the view is great. Head to Tokyu Plaza in Ginza and then take the lift to the top floor. You don’t need to book ahead but you will need to pay for entry which gives you a drinks voucher. Then you can enjoy great city views or spend an hour or so watching the busy intersection. Think of it as a micro Shibuya crossing.

Mori Tower

If you want to get a great shot of Tokyo Tower and be a little lower, Mori Tower is a great choice. Located in Roppongi and easy to get to from almost anywhere, this is a great little spot. When I went it was very quiet but I heard it can get busy. Also while you’re nearby check out Team Labs light exhibition that’s happening within the same area.

Odaiba

This final spot isn’t a rooftop so adding it as a bonus. If you head to Odaiba, you can get some great views of the city especially during sunset. Also there is another Team Labs in the area that’s worth checking out.
